There are two know gold mines in Wales the Clogau Gold mine and the Dolgellau mine. The Dolgellau mine was mined on a large scale back in 75 AD up until 300 AD during Roman Wales yet is no longer mined but now open as a tourist attraction run by the national trust. The Clogau Gold mine extracted large amount of gold form 1862 up until 1911 where a recorded 165,031 tons were mined. The Clogau Gold mine was purchased by Mr William S Roberts in 1989 as a tourist attraction, although due to planning restriction this was not possible. In 1992 he reopened the mine as a working mine extracting the available gold although the mine was closed again in 1998.
Clogau Gold began production of a 5-piece unique jewellery range in 1994 which was available at the mine's small souvenir shop. Each item of jewellery contained Welsh Gold. Holding a small amount of stock from the reopening of the mine they are able to continue providing this unique jewellery range which has grown to be sold via around 500 outlets.
